Contra 1: slippery and fragile
If on one hand the design of the Galaxy S8 is beautiful and unique, on the other hand it comes accompanied by some weaknesses. The first is that the device is very smooth, so it does not take long for it to end up slipping from your hand or sliding from your lap to the floor as soon as you hesitate.
However, this would not be so serious if it were not for the second problem, which is the fact that the S8 is one of the most fragile cell phones that exist, at least according to most international experts. That is, if you want to ensure beyond a shadow of a doubt that it will keep your investment protected, it is virtually mandatory to wear a hood.
Contra 2: poorly positioned audio
As much as the Galaxy S8’s speaker can achieve strong volumes without distorting the audio much, its position does not help anything. As the sound output is on the bottom of the unit, it is very easy to finish covering it by hand, and it is difficult to hear anything when you play or watch videos in landscape mode. At least Samsung included great AKG headphones in the phone case.
Counter 3: Poor digital sensor location
The S8’s digital sensor sits at the back, next to the camera. The position is unintuitive, so it’s easier for you to end up putting your finger on the camera lens than hitting the scanner first. This, however, does not mean that the biometric reader is bad. When you hit the position, it works just fine. Also, it’s harder to miss the location if you wear a hood – which we’ve already said here is pretty much a must anyway.
Contra 4: Iris and facial recognition failures
In addition to the digital sensor, the S8 comes with other biometric unlocking options. One is the iris reader, which is quite safe and agile – when it works. From time to time, the lighting of the environment ends up messing up, a situation in which the unlocking takes so long to work that it would be faster to draw the pattern on the screen.
Another option is facial recognition, which works with great agility all the time. However, Samsung itself acknowledges that this option is not the safest – and there have been cases of people who have managed to cheat the phone using photos or videos in which the owner’s face appears. We ourselves have been able to do this with theS8+ a few months ago, but the same trick did not work out with the S8 now. In any case, it is better to use the other biometrics methods.
Contra 5: hard to swallow price
It’s been a few months since the launch, but Samsung has not yet lowered the official S8 price on its site. Over there, the device continues to cost $ 4,000, which is a very expensive value and not recommended for most Brazilians. At least you can find several promotions with the device, so the way is to be smart when there are good discounts – as is the case of the links at the end of this text.
Pro 1: Excellent cameras
Even without having a dual system in the rear, the S8 comes with one of the best cameras among today’s smartphones. The 16 MP dual-pixel sensor has an f / 1.7 aperture – so you can take great photos in bright, dark or dimly lit places. In addition, autofocus and click speed are among the fastest on a mobile, and the colors also look great on the images.
In selfies, the 8 MP front sensor does excellent job in bright places and also works well in dark environments, even without an LED flash. If the situation tightens, the screen may break a branch and serve as a front flash. Finally, it is also worth mentioning that 4K videos come out very good and image stabilization helps to eliminate slight swings.
Pro 2: unique design
The design of the S8 makes it one of the most beautiful smartphones you can buy today – and no, Samsung has not paid us to write this. The reduced edges and curves of the Infinity Display concept not only embellish the handset but also make it cool to hold and ensure a unique look, hard to confuse with other smartphones.
Pro 3: cutting-edge performance
Although the S8 Exynos 8895 Octa chip is a bit weaker than the rival Snapdragon 835, Samsung’s top-of-the-line performance can still be great. All tasks are executed very quickly, and the machine can handle all kinds of tasks without the slightest problem. Even the heaviest games with demanding graphics run without any hassle and without making the phone heat up.
Pro 4: Bixby news
When the S8 was revealed officially, Bixby was one of the highlights, but Samsung ended up launching the device without one of the most interesting functions of the assistant: voice commands. Now these functions have been released and finally make Bixby more than just a cover version ofGoogle Now.
With the novelty, you can give complex commands naturally, and the wizard performs them all very well. A pity that for now this only works in English and Korean, which remains a barrier for many Brazilians. However, Samsung has already confirmed that it is working to bring include our language.
Pro 5: Progress in Software
One of the weaknesses of Samsung handsets has always been TouchWiz’s heavy and troublesome interface. In S8, the company got it right and made the system much lighter and more agile. Several changes are still there, but the experience has been a bit closer to theAndroid pure, and now the user has more control over the preinstalled system and applications – which is great and helps to please as much as it is and who is not a fan of Korean.
